Two-Minute Debate

Ages 12–15 · 15 minutes · You’ll need: A timer and a topic

Argue one side for two minutes, then swap and argue the other side just as well.

Set up

Let the device pick a topic and keep the time, or use your own.

How to play

  1. Pick a topic.
  2. Toss a coin to decide who argues for.
  3. Take turns: give reasons and examples until the timer ends.
  4. Swap sides and argue the opposite.
  5. Decide together which argument was strongest, and why.

What to say

  • “What’s your best reason?”
  • “Can you give an example?”
  • “What would the other side say?”

Easier: One minute each, on a light topic.

Harder: Three minutes, a bigger question, and you must answer the other side’s best point.

End with one question: “Did arguing the other side change your mind at all?”
