Jar Guess
Ages 4–7 · 10 minutes · You’ll need: A jar, dried beans or pasta
An estimation game: guess how many, then count in tens to check.
Set up
Use a real jar of beans or pasta, or the jar on this device.
How to play
- Look at the jar for a few seconds.
- Everyone makes a guess and says why.
- Count together in groups of ten.
- The closest guess wins. Talk about what helped.
What to say
- “Is it more than 20 or less than 20?”
- “How did you decide?”
- “Let’s count in tens: ten, twenty…”
Easier: Use fewer than ten things and count them one by one.
Harder: Use a bigger jar, or guess before you are allowed a close look.
End with one question: “Was your guess too big or too small, and why?”
