Number Duel
Ages 8–11 · 5 minutes · You’ll need: Nothing
Quick-fire sums for two: plus, minus, times or divide. The explanation scores the point, not the speed.
Set up
Play on paper, or on this device: choose + − × or ÷ and the game picks the next level from how the last round went.
How to play
- Pick who answers first.
- Read the sum aloud and answer it.
- Say in one sentence how you got the answer.
- Swap after each sum, or play as one team.
- After ten sums, say how it felt: too easy, just right or too hard.
What to say
- “How did you get that answer?”
- “Is there a quicker way?”
- “Nice, you made ten first.”
Easier: Stay with sums to 10 and use fingers or the dot picture.
Harder: The grown-up gets bigger numbers, or you both race the clock as a team.
End with one question: “Which sum made you think hardest?”
