Memory Tray

Ages 4–7 · 10 minutes · You’ll need: A tray, a tea towel and 5 to 10 small objects

The classic memory game: look closely, then spot what has gone.

Set up

Put five small objects on a tray, or play on this device.

How to play

  1. Look at the tray together for 30 seconds.
  2. Name the objects out loud as you look.
  3. Cover the tray while one thing is taken away.
  4. Uncover it. What’s missing?
  5. Swap roles, and add one more object each round.

What to say

  • “How will you remember them all?”
  • “Try making up a little story with the objects.”

Easier: Three objects and a whole minute to look.

Harder: Ten objects, 20 seconds, and two things go missing.

End with one question: “What trick helped you remember?”
