What is this show teaching?
From our book Steady, chapter 9: Guarding against toxic influences
What a child watches comes in through the eyes and becomes part of them. Age ratings are built around violence, sex and swearing. They don’t rate the everyday way people on screen treat each other. Ten statements about one show and how you watch it.
You get: Where one show stands on four scripts, how much you watch it together, the one to talk about first, three questions to ask while watching, and one step for this week.
Pick the one show, film series or video channel your child watches most.
Answer 10 statements about it, from Never to Almost always. About 3 minutes.
Honest limits: the four scripts, and the watching-together bar, come from research on what children copy from screens (Bandura, Ross and Ross, 1963; Huesmann and colleagues, 2003), on the hidden aggression in some shows (Coyne and colleagues, 2010) and on talking while watching (Nathanson, 1999). A quick mirror for one show, built on your memory of it, not a validated test.
Private: answers stay on this device. We never see them.
